Obverse. Two footballers in mid-celebration, arms raised toward a globe — read as Korea and Japan, the joint hosts of the 2002 World Cup. Behind them, the lines of a football pitch open out in perspective, framed by the Republican motto LIBERTÉ — ÉGALITÉ — FRATERNITÉ. Date 2002 and face value 1/4 Euro at the foot of the field, signed JIMENEZ.

Reverse. A stylised ribbon-banner reading ALLEZ LA FRANCE streams across the field, paired with a football and the silhouettes of two players in motion. Designer’s signature JIMENEZ at the lower left.

Context

Issued the year France defended its 1998 World Cup title in Korea and Japan. The 1/4 euro denomination was introduced shortly after the changeover from the franc, allowing the Monnaie de Paris to keep its tradition of small-format silver commemoratives alive in the new currency. Joaquin Jimenez — best known for designing the common side of several euro coins and the long-running La Semeuse — chose a deliberately graphic, almost poster-like composition rather than a heraldic one. Brilliant Universel finish, delivered in its numbered certificate folder.
