Obverse. Draped bust of Liberty wearing the Phrygian cap, after Augustin Dupré. Legend RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE around the rim. The artist’s signature is in cursive below the bust — a reproduction of the original 1790s die rather than a modern interpretation.

Reverse. 1 FRANC at the centre within an open laurel wreath, date 1992 at the foot, the motto LIBERTÉ • ÉGALITÉ • FRATERNITÉ around the rim.

Context

On 21 September 1792 the National Convention abolished the monarchy; the following day it proclaimed the First Republic. The 1992 bicentenary was marked by an entire programme of commemorative pieces — from this 1 franc through to a 500 franc gold issue. The choice to reproduce Dupré’s Marianne, struck under his own supervision two centuries earlier, reads as a deliberate gesture: a coin of the Fifth Republic citing the iconography of the First. Belle Épreuve striking, with a mintage of 30,000.
